How to pray

Christian singer songwriter Keith Green said even our very breath should be prayer and it is true. For a Christian, prayer is quite literally “the breath of life.”

It’s crucial therefore we learn how to pray so that we can both get to know our GOD, and that we can learn to recognise the voice of the LORD GOD Almighty, the Most High.

How to pray

Now a question for you…

Can you recognise when it is Jesus who speaks to you, rather than when it is His Father in Heaven who speaks to you, or when the wonderful Holy Spirit speaks with you?

Is there a difference between them?

Now of course, our GOD is ONE, yet the wonderful beauty of the mystery of the Godhead (Colossians 2:2 and 1 Timothy 3:16) shows us there are three distinct persons revealed as GOD to those who fellowship with Him in prayer. God the Father, God the Son Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit.

Therefore understanding this distinction (known as the Trinity or Triune GOD in theology) we are instructed by Jesus to pray to “our Father in Heaven.”

“For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.
In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:8-10 NKJV

We know we can also address Jesus directly in prayer too as John 14:13,14 make clear…“And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” John 14:13,14 NKJV

Secondly we also know that Jesus Christ Himself is praying for us…

“It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” Romans 8:34 NKJV

Thirdly we also see the Holy Spirit intercedes and is praying for believers too…

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Romans 8:26 NKJV

In return we can also pray in the Holy Spirit (and praying in tongues). It's especially powerful on many levels to...

  • Get to know GOD.
  • Learn how to hear GOD.
  • Learn how to put off the old nature and put on the new nature given us to live holy lives.
  • Launch powerful prayers to defeat satan, because Jesus says that the Holy Spirit is our personal trainer and counsellor in truth (John 14:16-17 NKJV).

So let me ask you again…

Can you recognise when GOD speaks to you?

Well if you can recognise when GOD is speaking to you that is wonderful because...

That is what prayer is all about, speaking with and listening to GOD in return. It is about developing an ongoing relationship with the living GOD, with His Son and with the Holy Spirit.

This relationship will last all eternity based in GOD's perfect love. The whole of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation is simply about relationship; the relationship of GOD with man. Therefore  you can build that relationship with the GOD of the heavens and the earth, who made everything... by learning how to pray.

There are also certain types of prayer which the Holy Spirit may lead you into on different occasions such as…

  • Intercession prayers.
  • Petition prayers.
  • Spiritual warfare prayers.
  • Prayers to bind and cast out demons.
  • Prayers to heal the sick.
  • Prayers to raise the dead.
  • Prayers to heal relationships such as restoring marriages.
  • Prayers of praise and adoration and worship.
  • Prayers of thanksgiving.
  • Prayers to break curses and uproot and destroy witchcraft.
  • Prayers to destroy generational or ancestral problems.
  • Praying in tongues (also sometimes referred to as “praying in the Spirit” Jude 1:20).
  • Prophetic prayers.

Therefore if you need to learn how to pray this page will point you in the right direction.

And the best way to learn is by putting into practice what Jesus taught.

He said…

“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” Matthew 6:5-7 NKJV

There you have it. Go into your bedroom and shut the door, no mobile phone, no Facebook, no laptop, no distractions. Simply begin talking to your Father in Heaven and this is important, do it in the Name of Jesus Christ because He is waiting for you right now… and wants to answer you.

Here’s the proof from the words of Jesus...

“Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.” John 16:23 NKJV

I hope you enjoy the rest of these prayer resources because learning how to pray is one of the most powerful skills you can develop which will stand you in good stead for the whole of eternity.
