Spiritual Warfare (How To Stand Against Satan, Hit Back And Overcome The Powers Of Darkness)

What is Spiritual Warfare anyway?

Let’s look at one of Jesus’s statements where He talks about ‘violence’ in relation to the Kingdom of heaven to get an answer...

“And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.” Matthew 11:12 NKJV

In this illustration Jesus is referring to a warfare taking place in the heavenlies. The Apostle Paul further reveals that what Jesus alludes to above is a real war being fought 24/7. However it is in the invisible realm against satan, demons, principalities and powers of evil. Though unseen to the human eye, it is nonetheless real and exceedingly violent.

How to war against the Devil and his demonic forces (articles)...

Paul makes the reality of spiritual warfare very clear in this scripture…

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12 NKJV

What Paul refers to also involves “hand to hand combat” (ie ‘wrestling’) through prayer warfare against real invisible beings of different types and ranks.

It is conducted by members of the Church on earth (the Body of Christ) and prayer in Christ gives them power to win. These satanic powers of darkness oppose the saints of GOD and the Kingdom of the Most High at every turn because they are inherently evil.

They do the bidding of their fallen master, the devil, whom Paul describes as “the god of this world” in 2 Corinthians 4:4 KJV.

We can see from the Corinthians passage above that satan exercises rulership over the world. It was handed to him directly by Adam and Eve because in the beginning they sinned.

Jesus corroborates this because in His temptation in the wilderness the devil offered to give this very dominion and rulership (previously lost by Adam and Eve) back to Him.

This scripture proves it...

“The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.

And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.

If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
Luke 4:5-7 NIV

It is interesting to note when Jesus was challenged by the devil like this He did not deny the rulership satan was claiming to hold.

Jesus knew that back in the garden of Eden, His Father Almighty GOD,  respected Adam and Eve’s free will decision to give the authority and dominion over the world, that the LORD had given them (Genesis 1:26-28) into the devil’s hands when they sinned.

This in effect installed the devil as a new ruler over all that GOD had just given Adam and Eve (including all humanity).

However Jesus Christ came to reverse Satan's rulership, and give it back to human beings (who accept Christ as their LORD and Saviour).

He did this by living on this earth without sin, and dying a perfect sinless death on the cross, and shedding His blood as a sacrifice in Jerusalem. Christ's mission in this was to defeat the devil who had tricked mankind into handing over dominion to him all those years before.

The Apostle John makes it very clear…

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8 NKJV

This is why in the New Testament we see disciples with a new type of authority and power to deal with the demons and every power of darkness.

For example...

“Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”

And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:17-19 NKJV

And for believers, the book of Revelation reveals the ultimate weapon against the devil is the Blood of Jesus Christ shed on His cross to take away our sins…

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”
Revelation 12:11 NKJV

Hence we can see that…

  • There is an invisible war between the Kingdom of Heaven and the powers of darkness (such as evil spirits, powers and entities) ruled over by satan.
  • The saints of GOD (believers and followers of Christ) can bind all wicked forces through prayer.
  • Disciples of Jesus have “power over ALL the power of the enemy.” (Luke 10:19)

As believers in Jesus we have been given the victory over all the powers of darkness, including the devil himself because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ through the cross where he shed His blood to cancel satan’s rule.

Dear saints of GOD, it is time to rise up, put on your armour as the famous passage of Ephesians 6 teaches below.

It is time to exercise our new GOD given authority over every satanic thing, whether it be witchcraft, curses, hexes or any power of darkness such as demons, evil spirits, satanic angels or principalities or powers of wickedness in the heavenly realms.

Therefore as a first step to learn how to fight back and win, put your armour on...

"Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:13-18 NKJV
